Many people who are nearing retirement are unaware of recent changes to their state pension age, according to a survey.

Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Age UK found that 24% of people aged 50-64 don't know what their state pension age is, and 52% of those found it was higher than expected.

Nearly a third of people had never checked their state pension age or couldn't remember the last time they checked it.

Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said:

"Clearly there is still much confusion about the age at which people can expect to receive their state pension and our worry is that many who have few resources to fall back on are in for a nasty shock."

Since April 2010, the state pension age has risen to 65 for women, and is set to continue rising for both men and women to reach 67 by 2028.

With most respondents (58%) to the survey saying they feel very negatively about these changes, Age UK has urged the Government to offer more support to those most affected by the increases.
