Training courses for vets and nurses
Improve CPD, established in 1998 by a group of veterinary surgeons, provides training courses for vets and nurses across the UK. Its innovative concept of modular training courses has contributed to Improve becoming the largest private provider of continuing education courses for veterinary surgeons in the UK. Based in Cricklade, Improve CPD won the Wiltshire Small Business of the Year award in 2002. It has sinced launched programmes in a number of other countries as part of the global organisation Improve International Ltd.
Managing director David Babington was looking for a more locally based, accessible firm of accountants five years ago, when the company was growing rapidly. He turned to Morris Owen, whose partner Alan Barlow helped to put Improve in control of its own accounting systems. David now uses Alan as a key part of his strategic planning. "Instead of having a historical relationship with our accountants, we look ahead with Morris Owen, and its this area of the relationship that I value the most," he says.
Improve is now looking at the next three- to five-year phase of growth, re-evaluating their strategy and aiming to increase turnover and profit. Alongside David will be Alan, setting financial milestones and determining how to achieve them. Their relationship will continue to help the company do what it says – Improve.
"We're never short of ideas, but it's not always appropriate to act on them all. I use Alan as a sounding board – a reality check, really."
