Best Western Premier Blunsdon House Hotel

The first four-star hotel in Wiltshire

John Clifford became managing director of Blunsdon House Hotel in 1989, but he had been part and parcel of the four-star Wiltshire hotel ever since his parents started a B&B at their farmhouse in 1958. His father, Peter Clifford, began his working relationship with Morris Owen – the founder of the firm – 56 years ago, when Morris did his farming accounts for him. The B&B became a licensed country club in 1960, then a fully licensed hotel in 1962. Blunsdon House has since climbed through the ratings to become the first four-star hotel in Wiltshire.

Dave Bond, now senior partner at Morris Owen, is the fourth generation of partners to look after Blunsdon House's accounts and business affairs. He became their main contact at Morris Owen twelve years ago, although his connection with the hotel goes back much further: he can remember doing the hotel's accounts when he was a youngster. "It's always interesting working with a company that's growing," says Dave. John points out that through all the expansion and change, Morris Owen have provided a crucially important thread of continuity.

John and Peter were chatting in Zan's bar at the hotel, which used to be John's bedroom when he was a child. As a family firm, Blunsdon House has never lost its personal touch, which one of the keys to its success. Perhaps that is why there is such an affinity between the hotel and Morris Owen.

"Building up this hotel has been a team effort, and Morris Owen have been with us all the way as part of that team."
