To buy or sell?

Rob Harman 1Thinking of buying or selling a business in 2010 and beyond? Morris Owen will be running a series of free monthly workshops throughout 2010 concentrating on the issues surrounding buying and selling a business.

The “What is your business worth” workshop is a 2 hour, bite sized, introduction for business owners to help them to understand how their businesses could be valued and more importantly what would make their business more attractive to potential buyers. It also looks at how they can try to achieve the best sales value and reduce the costs and time of the sales transaction.

Rob Harman, partner at Morris Owen explains, “This is a workshop we’ve been running for clients for the past two years with great success, in 2010 we’ve decided to open them up for non-clients as well. This workshop will give business owners some of the tools and techniques they can put into practice for valuing their own business and increasing its worth. We also look at who might buy your business and grooming it for sale as well as how to go about expanding your business through acquisition.”

The second workshop “Capital taxes on the sale of a business” focuses on the Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax implications arising from the disposal of a business interest. We look at what is it you are actually selling - the assets or the shares? How will you be paid - cash, cash and shares or earn outs? And where do the taxes sit - before, during and after the sale?

“We believe that it’s imperative for business owners to prepare for the sale of their business as far in advance as possible. By doing this they can understand exactly what they want from the deal with no hidden surprises” Rob added.

The workshops last roughly 2 hours each and will run once a month at Morris Owens offices in Devizes Road on the following dates:

  • What is your business worth? 9th February 2010, 9th March 2010, 20th April 2010.
  • Capital taxes on the sale of a business 17th March 2010, 14th April 2010, 12th May 2010.
